Are you looking for something novel to do during your stay at self-catering accommodation in Cape Town? Make plans to visit Robertson’s weekend of whacky wine celebrations from 31 May to 3 June.
This jovial affair is a mish-mash of family fun, cellar tours, arts and crafts, country-style eats, sports, tastings, pairings and wine, wine, wine.
The festival takes place at venues dotted all around the wonderful wine region of Robertson, where the good times always seem to be flowing, about 150km from the Mother City.
Your Passport to Fun
Start your journey at any point along the route by purchasing your passport online for R200 and stipulating your first stop. Your goodie bag full of festival essentials will be waiting for you when you get there. Designated drivers get a specially selected range of gifts for being a good citizen. Children under 18 can join in the fun for free.
If you can’t find a responsible individual to do the driving, you can round up 6 friends and hire a Buddy Bus for the day to transport you around.
What’s on During the Weekend?
Every year the Whacky Wine weekend gets bigger, with over 40 venues participating in 2018.
Wine tasting hours are from 2pm to 5pm on Thursday, 10am till 5pm on Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, but there are many activities on the go outside of these hours.
Here’s a taster of what you can expect:
Children’s Activities are offered at many of the wine estates along the way. These include jumping castles, jungle gyms, giant chess and jenga, face painting and supervised activities.
Potjiekos, vetkoek and soup, fresh oysters, breakfasts, food stalls, charcuterie platters, olives and cheese, pulled pork pots and even hot dogs are among some of the delicacies available at various venues.
There’s so much More
You can take safari and vineyard tours, learn the secrets of premier chefs, taste a huge variety of wines, beer, brandy, bubbly and of course sample the delights of Cape specialist gins.
