It seems energetic locals and visitors alike can never get enough of Table Mountain or run out of ways to enjoy this iconic landmark, and the latest Cape Town luxury, courtesy of AWOL tours, is exploring the mountain by night – on mountain bikes.
The idea was conceived during 2015 as a way to extend the hours of enjoyment available to those who like to squeeze the most out of their day, and as a great way to escape the Cape Town summer heat while mountain biking.
The rides set off at 19h00 every Tuesday and Thursday from the month of October, with a minimum of 4 riders accepted for each tour, and there are trails of varying difficulty to suit riders of all abilities.
Visiting bikers are provided with an AL129 Momsem mountain bike, a helmet with a light and a front handlebar light of 980 lumens. Having two lights increases your range of vision considerably, with a wide beam of light to illuminate the trail, and the penetrating helmet light for the finer details directly ahead. Many riders report that being able to see less of their surroundings increases their focus and confidence while out on the trail.
Lasting two hours, these exhilarating adventures traverse between 12 and 18 km of fynbos-covered single track along the slopes of the mountain around the Rhodes Memorial and provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the night-time vistas of Cape Town.
If you are lucky you may even spot nocturnal animals such as porcupines, spotted tortoises, caracals, rare leopard toads and owls as you trundle along in the darkness and it is a real treat to have the mountain almost all to yourself, free from the bustle of daytime visitors.
The journey commences at the Rhodes Memorial and winds back down to the start pointing, and transfers can be arranged to and from your accommodation for added convenience.
If you have been up the cable car, hiked the slopes and admired Table Mountain from every other angle, why not tick another Table Mountain experience off your list, with this unusual evening’s entertainment? What a way to celebrate Halloween
