January is a month of joyful celebration in the winelands as it becomes time to reap the harvest of last year’s hard work, and start production on a brand new batch of Cape Town luxury wines and bubblies.
After devastating fires put a stop to the festivities last year, Delheim`s annual Start of Harvest Festival is back with a big bang on 28 and 29 January 2017.
The fun starts at noon each day with a welcoming drink of freshly pressed grape juice, accompanied by a sweet mosbolletjie to get you in the mood for the day’s traditional entertainment. All of this, including the activities, fresh grapes from the harvest and a Delheim wine glass, is incorporated in the ticket price which is R100p/p for adults and R80p/p for children between the ages of 2 and 12.
Traditional grape-stomping is one of the most popular activities each day, so roll up your pants and prepare to do your bit for the harvest. Grape stomping is enormous fun, but do plan your outfit accordingly and remember to wear a hat and sunblock for this festive outdoor activity.
Live entertainment and a barrel load of laughter
Barrel-rolling races are a new item on the agenda for amusement, with great prizes up for grabs and many laughs to be had as contestants try to master this tricky art.
Lawn games, live music and great eats are all part of the good-natured fun at this sociable event, and the harvest table will be groaning under the weight of all the old favourites, as well as brand new options.
Try out a selection of Delheim wines with different dishes to see which are a match made in heaven at the wine pairing event, or just try a little of everything you fancy from the wide selection. There will be plenty of vegetarian options to choose from too, and an ice cream truck in lieu of dessert for those giving the dessert pairing a miss.
As a courtesy to the European origins of Delheim’s patriarch, ‘Spatz’ Sperling, you can try out some German eats this year such as Bratwurst coupled with a Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend.
Tickets are restricted to 120 per day so book as soon as possible to ensure your place at this foot stomping barrel-rolling fun event in 2017.
