Don’t be fooled by the reasonable prices at Sea Point’s La Mouette. The cuisine you find here is just as fabulous as what you’ll get for a much heftier fee at many top luxury Cape Town restaurants.
You shouldn’t expect any highbrow service either. This French eatery is committed to “nice food in a nice environment” according to head chef Henry Vigar. Here service is truly delivered with an effortless welcoming smile.
Both locals and visitors are encouraged to feel totally at home in any of the 4 intimate dining rooms. Each room boasts its own fireplace to enhance the venue’s warm hospitality during the Cape’s wintery months. Alternatively, diners can choose to feast al fresco style in the cobbled courtyard as summer begins to have its say.
Great prices and fantastic meals are just part of the charm that has been attracting the crowds here since 2010. Variety has a lot to do with it too.
A Taste of Spring
The menu changes with the seasons and the latest offering is the 6-course spring tasting menu which was unveiled at the beginning of September. This exquisite experience marries fine French nibbles with perfectly suited vintages from the surrounding Cape Winelands adding another element of excellence to dining at La Mouette.
The price tag is a modest R445 without the wines and R745 with a side of Cape Town’s finest. You can even add another course for R495 sans the wine and R825 if you want to go the whole hog.
What’s on the Menu?
Some of the titbits to be savoured include Caprese Salad, pulled BBQ beef bao and mushroom gyozas. A choice of kingklip or cauliflower cheese couscous, and crispy lamb shoulder or asparagus and poached egg, complete the line-up. The optional extra dish is savoury French toast. ‘Melting’ Ferrero Rocher provides a sweet surprise at the end.
All of these dishes are prepared to perfection with a range of unique ingredients to bring out their best flavours.
Some of the wines that have been selected for this mix and match extravaganza include red, white, sweet and dry wines chosen for their ability to elevate every bite to the next level.
If that sounds like a bit much for your appetite to endure, there are many other options. The a la carte lunch menu is light and inviting while dinner offers a little more substance. You can even tuck in to some French-inspired tapas while enjoying a drink at the bar.
La Mouette promises to deliver something different during your luxury Cape Town vacation no matter what time of year you visit.
