The winelands are coming to town this April, when the Constantia Food and Wine Festival takes place at the Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate Cricket Oval in the Constantia suburb of Cape Town, from the 17th to the 19th. Constantia has a long association with fine food and wines and this festival serves as a reminder of the riches that we have right on our doorstep.
This festival sounds almost too good to be true to me, fine dining and wining without the driving, along with a days’ entertainment for just R180 per person. What’s more, I can leave my car in the secure parking area opposite Constantia Uitsig and take the shuttle to the entrance of the venue if I choose.
With a number of wine estates showcasing their premium blends and 20 tasting tickets, included in the entry price, driving seems like something my designated driver pal will be doing on my behalf that day in any case. The guilty parties include such noteworthy estates as Buitenverwachting, Groot and Klein Constantia and Steenberg Vineyards, who will serving up reds, whites and everything in between.
Food and wine go hand in hand, and some of luxury Cape Town restaurants will also be coming to the party, presenting their award-winning wares for sale at stalls on the day. I plan to pack my picnic basket and sprawl out on the lawns to enjoy the food, wine and entertainment, but you can also eat on the run if you wish.
The entertainment line-up includes Kai Liam Connor, Newton & Co, Me & Mr Brown, IKE Moriz and Francois Du Plessis who will be providing the background tunes until 9pm in the evenings, every night except Sunday.
The youngsters will be kept occupied in their own play area and some retail relief is offered in the form of stalls hosted by Constantia’s design community, complete with ATM’s for those ‘on a whim’ purchases.
So save the date for the Constantia Food and Wine Festival, whether you anticipate a romantic afternoon with a loved one, or a family day with the whole crew, the day will be filled with good tastes and great vibes, guaranteed!
